“Papa Joe”: remarks before Opus 1964 finale.

While working to repair the badly warped Opus ’64 “highlights” LP, I stumbled on the following brief recording of Dad’s remarks to the audience. He’s out of breath, having just conducted the band in the conclusion of Rossini’s William Tell overture (aka The Lone Ranger Rides Again). That, and his pack-a-day habit, unfortunately. I never knew this brief audio sample existed. It’s all we have remaining to remember the “Golden Age” at St. Albans High.

  1. I’m so touched to hear that precious voice once again. A Bible verse says, “He being dead yet speaketh”. Mr. Ervin still speaks in every single one of us. I have been singing all my life. Thanks first of all to Mr. Ervin for his strict, perfectionist, conducting and teaching all the minute details. if ONE of us was off on ONE note, he heard it and pointed to the perpetrator. That is how one learns to sing. I am eternally grateful for his carving on my life.

  2. Had never heard this. I have fond memories of that voice as I sat at the piano & the special nickname he gave me – PM.
