16 Feb 2026: These are pieces that I have actively worked on since the summer of 2020 or have plans to work on in the near future. As time permits, I’ll post recordings of these selections when I can do so without completely embarrassing myself. Most of these will be audio only, as my disc quota won’t accommodate a lot of digital videos. You’ll note that this page is not littered with a lot of embedded players: download time would be prohibitive. As a recording is deemed satisfactory, its entry here will be hyperlinked to the corresponding media file without any embedding code. Each selection will open in a blank page or blank tab. Your browser should be able to detect the media type automatically and load the appropriate player for your browser and operating system (at least in theory).
Accompaniments are virtual, authored in digital audio workstation software. I’ve been using various releases of Reason Studio for this purpose, “virtualizing” the piano parts note-for-note. Time-consuming, but necessary, as I have only rudimentary keyboarding skills.
Igor Stravinsky: Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo
- I. Sempre p e molto tranquillo (A clarinet)
- II. (A clarinet)
- III. This is basically a jazzy, ragtime piece. (B-flat clarinet)
Franz Josef Haydn: Violin Sonata #1 in G Major
Arranged in F Major for B-flat clarinet and piano by Alexei Volodin
- Andante (fragment, 2021)
- Allegro (my recording will omit the two very long repeats)
W. A. Mozart: Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A Major
Arranged for Clarinet in A and piano by H. Kling
- I: Allegro
- II. Adagio
- II: Adagio (my transcription for English horn and piano; it extends to nearly the top of the instrument’s range. Not yet within my limits.)
- III. Rondo – Allegro (2022)
Claude Debussy: Arabesque No. 2
Arranged for B-flat clarinet and piano by Harold Wright; edited by Ethan Sloane and Thomas Weston
- Allegretto scherzando
Grigoraş Dinicu/Jascha Heifitz: Hora Staccato
Arranged for either B-flat clarinet or B-flat tenor saxophone, with piano accompaniment. A real workout for the ol’ tongue!
- Con persistenza ritmica
Maurice Ravel: Pavane [pour une Infante defunte]
- Arranged in G Major for B-flat clarinet and piano by Ralph Martino.
- I’ve also transcribed this in A Major for my English horn — if I feel brave enough. It extends well up into the third octave.
Paul Hindemith: Concerto for Clarinet in A and Orchestra
The accompaniment is a piano reduction, rather than a piano “part.” Doubtful that a single pianist can play it, but I successfully virtualized it in software. I also added flute and bassoon lines where the piano reduction benefits from them.
- I: Rather fast/Ziemlich schnell
- II: Ostinato (fast/Schnell)
- III: Quiet (Ruhig)
- IV: Gay (Hindemith writes “Heiter,” so let’s just go with “cheerful.” It surely is that.)
Paul Hindemith: Sonata in B-flat for Clarinet and Piano
- I: Mäsig bewegt (moderately moving)
- II: Lebhaft (lively)
- III: Sehr langsam (very slow)
- IV: Kleines rondo, gemaechlich
Henri Rabaud: Solo de Concours
For many years, this was a standard audition piece for the Paris National Conservatory. Back in 1968, I tried to play this for my tryout for the All-Kanawha County Band. The judge was the clarinet professor at Marshall University. It did not go well. 😬)
Alban Berg: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano
The first and third pieces have phrases marked “quasi Flutterzunge.” A true flutter-tongue is much easier on the flute. On clarinet, it can at best be approximated. For me, it’s still a “work in progress.”
- I. Mäsig (moderately)
- II. Sehr langsam (very slow)
- III: Sehr rasch (very rapid)
- IV: Langsam (slow)
