Video: Synthesizer + Modulated TV Audio

(approx. 12:00 mins; file size is 80 megabytes+)

  • TV audio: left channel from news broadcast from ALT BUS on Mackie mixer to synth instrument interface.
  • TV audio from instrument interface to a VCA where gain is controlled by gate and audio envelope.
  • TV audio from VCA to one input of ring modulator. Second input from a VCO. Modulator output to main mix.
  • Two Q960 sequential controllers run at (more or less) same rate based on d-c voltage from Standards module. Bottom Q960 tends to run slightly faster and gets progressively farther ahead.
  • Q119 sequential controller is slaved to top Q960 gates to maintain rhythm.
  • Each controller drives a single VCO. All three outputs to reverb module before main mix to VCF.
  • Audio from synthesizer to 8-channel Mackie mixer.
  • Inserts 1 and 2 to a Behringer FX-2000 effects processsor (chorus + delay).
  • Mix through the wall to the adjacent living room and a TEAC USB deck.

Real-time adjustments to the synthesizer are almost without limit. Here, I content myself with the following:

  • Changing octave settings on the VCOs.
  • Setting individual sequencer resets and stage “skips” on the two Q960s. Causes subtle shifts in harmonies.
  • Adjusting tempo by varying the d-c voltage from the Standards module.

So much more that could be done in real time.

The video was captured on my venerable Sony Digital-8 camcorder, which is 4:3 only. Video to Adobe Premiere, then to After Effects, then back to Premiere. From time to time, I step into the frame to make adjustments. I keep forgetting to turn Auto-Focus off on the camera and it tries to focus on moi.
