Every second one-minute excerpt from my synth was produced with the VCAs’ control pulse set slightly lower. This causes the notes to move in and out of phase with the lower foundation loop. The result is not as satisfying as Steve Reich’s “Piano Phase,” in part because the note sequences are not in union unison.
The various clips in this version are just jammed together end-to-end and layered in Reason, so transitions are not necessarily clean or smooth.
No, this first effort is not quite “resumé-tape-ready,” but it was fun to mix. I was especially pleased at how a single ramp wave can be clipped and filtered to give the impressions of low brass instruments.
FYI: every note you hear is coming from a single oscillator generating a clipped ramp waveform at various frequencies, sampling rates, filter settings, etc. All this glorious “noise” from a single VCO (ten separate loops, of course).
